Local Business Spotlight: Rice’s Country Hams

Local Country Ham Store Featured on Tennessee Crossroads

Did you know that October is National Eat Country Ham Month?  Well, now that you know, you need to head over to Rice’s Country Hams in Mt. Juliet to get ya some.  Started by Ed Rice, Sr. (Ron’s great uncle), Rice’s Country Hams is a third generation, family owned and operated business, and in fact, it’s the oldest retail business still in operation in Mt. Juliet. The Rice family has been curing country hams for over 60 years and has won countless blue ribbons and trophies over the years for their hams.  They’ve been featured on Tennessee Crossroads, and in 2014, Ed Sr. and Ed Jr. were inducted in the Wilson County Agricultural Hall of Fame.  This family knows their hams, and their store has been a staple of the community for decades.

Salt-cured, hickory smoked and naturally aged to perfection

Rice’s hams are salt-cured, hickory smoked and naturally aged, and from start to finish, they take the better part of a year before they’re ready to sell.  While their mouth-watering hams may be the star attraction, Rice’s thick sliced smoked bacon and hickory-smoked sausage are crowd pleasers too. The store also offers specialty items, such as pepper jelly, apple butter, grits, and sorghum, as well as gift packs which will shave some time off your holiday shopping.

Ham this good isn’t available year round

Rice’s is open only a few months of the year, usually from early October until Christmas Eve. Currently, the store hours are 9:00-4:00 Tuesday through Saturday, and you can also order through the website.  A little tip we learned the hard way: when you stop by to pick up your holiday ham, don’t forget to buy extra for your freezer so you can get your fix in the summertime when the store is closed!

About the Author

My wife and I live in Donelson, where we both were raised and graduated from high school (DCA Classes of 1983 and 1984).  Our current home is on the Cumberland River, very close to my childhood home and the former homes of both my McDonald and Rice grandparents.

Our daughter and son are grown now, and our daughter, Stephanie Miller, is my real estate partner.  She lives in Lebanon with her husband and their two children.  While Stephanie and I specialize in the areas of Downtown Nashville, Donelson, Hermitage, Old Hickory, Mt. Juliet and Lebanon, we have and do serve clients all over Middle Tennessee.

As a Nashville native, I’ve spent a lifetime watching our city evolve, and I am enthusiastic about showcasing it to others and serving their real estate needs.
